[...] Warning - Long Post (even for me!) Remember that when it comes to “Optimising your blog”, looking at the factors which will be picked up by the Search Engines is only one part of the equation. You also need to consider optimising the blog for your readers and optimising for your business objectives - creating a blog which happens to rank highly for certain relevant key word phrases is going to be of zero value to you if you can’t back that up with things that your readers are interested in. (We looked at Optimising for your Readers in part 1 and optimising for your business comes in part 3). [...]

@ Ian - what can I say but thank you! It's going well and I have no doubt there's further to go still!

@ Cath - the F shape research comes from Jakpob Nielsen who, in spite of his own insanely un-user friendly site is generally acknowledged as a "usability" expert. They carried out research on user habits (<a href="http://www.useit.com/alertbox/reading_pattern.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">linked here</a>) and saw the F shape effect. Let me know what you think?

Hi Mark - this is a really useful post. I often print pages out too - especially if it's a long post.

I had no idea that people read in an F shape. That is really worth knowing - it definitely gives a better idea of where to put things that you really want readers to see.

You must have worked wonders for Ian - I know he won't mind me saying this but a long time ago, he was getting a bit cynical about blogging. But it has obviously paid off for him now.

Mark,

Can I just say a huge thank you? Yes? okay then, "a huge thank you".

Your article on SEO is great, but it just echoes everything you've been doing for us.

I wasn't paid to say this, but you'd think I was. You're an absolute blogging guru. It's been a while since I checked in (although I read your articles via mail/reader etc) and I know I've said similar things before.

This time, I'd like to talk about the bottom line. Blogs increase them. And you've now proved that for ourselves in spades.

Everyone may think they need traffic, page rank, better SEO etc, but they often forget about the end result - how much more business will you get?

For me, it has been significant. I haven't taken the trouble to tot it up, but I do have one figure many will appreciate.

The volume of business has forced us to recruit 3 more staff in the last 3 weeks.

Before that we employed 8. So it's a significant leap forward.

When I first came across your blog, I was naive. I barely understood the principles. After signing up on your course, my eduation began. But it developed because I needed your expertise to me take a short-cut to the best results.

For readers of this comment, I'll add in a few words that will make you realise this is a serious comment. I am a true client. And if you want to talk to me about Mark's work, call me.

I am based in Liverpool, UK. And you can call me (daytime - 0151 236 4444). Ask for Ian.

Mark didn't ask me to write this, nor would he. He is an honourable, trustworthy and incredibly dedicated individual.

Soon, I suspect you will not be able to engage his services as I can only imagine he will be in great demand, so consider contacting him now if you're serious about your blog.
