well great artcile, good insights and very useful and trutful. I am only worried about the indexing part. Indexing is very dificult if you try it, and very easy if it happens by itself

A week later... after a bunch of experiments... Learning but with some frustration. I thought I would share the experiments and may be you can give me your opinion Mark.
What I am trying to test for it the following: what happens in Yahoo or Google when I type the exact title of an article without parentheses or with parentheses. Why, because with my Blogspot blog (http://myadventureinchina.blospot.com), that's how I got a lot of traffic, type the article title, without parentheses, and it's beautiful: you are first on Google and the search results is PERFECT: title is the title of the blog + title of the post; description is the first 2 lines of the post and the URL is the full URL with the permalink (title of post)... Far from what I get with my WordPress blog even when I get noticed (for instance the URL doesn't include the title of the post, even though I set up the permalink that way).
So... the experiments:
So, first I changed my permalinks so that they include the title of the post.
Then I corrected a mistake I had done in my settings: I had not included a blog title and tagline because it showed below the image header, and at the time did not know how to correct that.
I then 2-3 days ago, I added the whole list of pings (no punctuation between them, right?) to my settings.
Then 24 hours ago, I installed the sitemap plugin and even though I have still big hopes about this helping greatly the search engines, it has not proven yet to have any effect.
The results (www.travel-vermont.net): well, I still don't show up when I search the exact title of my article, even in parentheses, sometimes... and when I do, it doesn't show nicely: title of search is June 08, then the description is just a list of my pages and posts... not great; and the URL doesn't show the post title either.
I am suspected it is partially the way the chosen WordPress template is built because I know of another WordPress blog (www.nextbop.com) which doesn't have this problem even though I don't think they even have a sitemap!!
Mark, what are your feelings? I have to say that if I don't solve this, I am seriously considering having my blog on Blogspot (Blogger). I know what you say about blogs on your own website vs. somewhere else... but if the traffic on Blogspot is higher because Google has set its blogs so that they perform beautifully on its search results, traffic there (with forwards to website) is better than no traffic at all!!!
